Part of me reinvesting in my business is creating original art. I haven't put any effort into this for years, which is pretty bad when you're an artist. Creating original work, without any direction from someone else, or creating work without the expectation for it to be sold, is important for us to expand our creativity.
Because my business is built upon custom work I rarely give myself time to let my own imagination run wild. This year I'm going to change that and the adorable corgi above was the first big step!
I needed examples for my upcoming Valentine's pet portrait collection. So instead of having folks order early, or looking for models, or finding collaborators, I sat down and let my imagination run. I wanted to draw an adorable corgi sitting atop a heart shaped pillow surrounded by Valentine's candies.
After finishing that, I decided to add the two heart shaped balloons to really drive the theme home! This adventure into original art, even helped me develop the Valentine's color palette I'll be using as much as possible on all the custom Valentine's pet portraits! I even used the palette to create an original art sticker sheet that'll be for sale with the other Valentine's goodies!
Letting ourselves create freely is extremely import as humans. We're creative beings, we love to express ourselves through our creations. Whether you illustrate or paint like me, or you're into something more structural, like wood working, or cabinet building. Make sure you give yourself the space to express who you are!
Giving yourself the time to explore your creative mind will always be worth while.
